February 2024 About the Program: “Through the Lens of Black Women: Beauty and Expectations” is a one-weekend (February 2–4, 2024) experience which runs during and is dedicated to showcasing Black independent films directed by Black women. The 2024 edition featured four feature films and a panel conversation highlighting the theme of this year's program, Beauty and Expectations. Through the Lens... is a culmination of Johnson's independent study of Black independent film, an interest that sparked during her time as a former intern at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston during the Summer of 2022, and her own personal experiences as a Black woman. When thinking of selections for this year's program, she focused upon the idea of 'beauty' which further ignited and expanded into questions of what defines Black and female authorship in film.
